The Sites
The
Peninsula of Ras
Mohamed consists of a complex ecosystem.
Large formation of sand dunes, limestone and raised fossil reef
and fossil fauna is found here. Here another forest of mangroves
is found.
Animal life is abundant and
includes gazelle, fox and wild goat. Birds migrating from Europe
to Africa pass the Park of Ras Muhammed. Between April and May,
September and October thousands of storks are crossing the
Sinai, with a stopover at Ras Muhammed.
The high concentration of coral at Ras Muhammed has the effect,
that the fish are manifold: among the more than thousand different
species of fish sharks as well as turtles are present. Many sites
along the coastline of Ras Muhammed invite to spectacular dives.
The
Strait of Tiran is an important strategic point. The islands
Tiran and Sanafir in the center of the strait are
uninhabited and one cannot land there. The islands are included
in the Egyptian National Park of Ras Muhammed.
Four amazing reefs are found here. The Gordon Reef with
the lighthouse marking the navigation channel and a sunken freighter
at the edge of the reef, the small Thomas Reef, the Woodhouse
Reef and the Jackson Reef, where also a ship ran aground.
The reef drops down to a depth of some 70 meters.
These sites are extremely rich in fauna and among the many big
fish sharks are common. The currents are sometimes very strong.
Nabq, another of the protected coastal areas in Sinai,
is centered at the mouth of Wadi Kid. Mangroves, with a root system
on the water surface have the ability to filter sea-water, the
underside of their leaves covered with salt crystals. The mangroves
of Nabq are considered to be the northernmost point in the entire
Red Sea / Indian Ocean, where mangroves grow. The mangrove is equipped
with the important ability to stabilize and limit the erosion
of the coast-line. Naturally this habitat attracts many species
of animals reaching from manifold fish to all kind of birds.
Furthermore the largest Arak stands of the entire Middle East
region are found here. The Arak trees have a dune stabilizing
root system and their twigs were traditionally used as tooth brush
by the Bedouins.
Diving at Nabq is an experience. Reef life is rich and extremely
beautiful. Shoura al Manquata and Nakhlet al Tal
offer an easy access. Though often visibility is poor
caused by fine sediments washed out of the mangrove area a dive
at Nabq is very fascinating.
Ras Nasrani is not only known for the airport located
there but also for an extensive reef favored by scuba divers and
snorkelers alike. The southern wall is 25 meters and the northern
wall across the lighthouse drops to a depth of 45 meters.
The wreck of the Maria Schroeder,1965, is only one of many examples
for the dangers of these waters. Shipping in this part of the
Gulf of Aqaba needs skills to navigate around the reefs n the
narrow Gulf with its powerful currents.
