Approximately
170 km north from Sharm El Sheikh and 70 km south from Taba, there are
some unspoiled reefs left to discover.
The famous dive sites Ras Mamlah and Ras Abu Gallum can be reached from
Nuweiba off road by jeep for an hour and a half to two hours. Both reefs
belong to the Ras Mohamed National Park and therefore permissions from
the “Tourist Police” and the Protect the Coast Office” are needed.
Divers will immediately notice the still pristine conditions of these
reefs, which is largely due to their remote location.
Ras
Mamlah
is a 70 meter wall with lots of untouched hard/soft
corals. Big fish may be seen depending on the current. At Ras Abu
Gallum you find another impressive;90 meter
wall, where Napoleon fish and lots of other reef fish can be seen. Besides
these famous dive sites, there are reefs all around Nuweiba, where divers
and snorkel and enjoy themselves.
The “Pipeline”,
named after the pipes of the desalination plant is certainly worth a
dive to find a gigantic tablecoral on 15 meters, on 28 meters a huge
fancoral and for the “deep divers” an anchor line overgrown with pink
and blue soft coral on 35 meters. 500 meters north of “The Pipeline”
is the M.F.O.-base (Multiple Forces and Observers), right in
front of another interesting dive site. This reef is little known. Despite
the minimum depth of 17 meters and the occasionally strong current and
bad visibility, we often view there barracudas, stingrays, turtlesand
crocodile fish.
Other dive sites worth mentioning are Maagana and Devil’s Head, both
on a short distance north of Nuweiba.
An easy entry from Maagana
Beach leads to a 35 meter
wall with lots of hard coral structures. The left hand wall has a small
bridge leading into an open canyon. Big groopers, electric rays and
napoleon fish may be seen. At Devil’s Head you will find
at the right hand side, after a short surface swim a series of impressive
canyons, which lead to well beyond 40 meters. It is an excellent reef
for snorkellers and photographers.
Diving
Nuweiba from the shore,
away from the mass tourism and finding yourself and your buddy “alone”
on a reef with a Bedouin dinner cooked on a campfire afterwards will
be an enjoyable experience for everybody. Another unique experience
in Nuweiba is diving or snorkeling with free dolphins. “Olin”
and her baby have become so famous, that people from all over the world
came to visit her. 15 years ago the deaf Bedouin Abdallah found “Oleen”
and started to swim with her. They became best friends until her death
in Dec 2004.
